The Best Shows To Book In February

The Best Shows To Book In February

Posted by Janie Smith | 19 January 2019 | Arts & Culture, Magazine, What's On

One of the first things I like do in January is making a plan and book the theatre shows I want to see in February. Seeing a live show is a thrilling experience and I try and go as often as possible. Last month it was Everyone’s Talking About Jamie and Snow White starring Julian Clary and Dawn French. Jamie is still on and it’s an absolute laugh a minute but thought-provoking at the same time, so if it’s your thing make sure you don’t miss it!

So, that was last month but what am I recommending that you book now? Here are my top 6 suggestions;

The Book of Mormon – Prince of Wales Theatre

Okay, so this award-winning production has been running for quite a while now but if you haven’t seen it yet it’s time to get your tickets sorted. Written by the South Park guys it is an irreverent look at the story of a group of young naive Mormon missionaries travelling to Africa to convert the natives. Hysterical and very un PC at times this is not for the professionally offended! I cannot wait to see it again!

Home, I’m Darling – Duke of York Theatre

Laura Wade’s (Posh) sharp new play transfers to London’s West End following a sell-out run at the National Theatre. This cutting new comedy shines a light on one woman’s desire to be a cookie cutter housewife.

Avenue Q – New Wimbledon Theatre

Avenue Q is an “autobiographical and biographical” coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. Its characters lament that as children, they were assured by their parents, and by children’s television programs such as PBS’s Sesame Street, that they were “special” and “could do anything”; but as adults, they have discovered to their surprise and dismay that in the real world their options are limited, and they are no more “special” than anyone else. The musical is notable for the use of puppets, animated by unconcealed puppeteers, alongside human actors. Hilarious and boundary-pushing! I am so excited to be able to see it in Wimbledon’s own West End theatre!

Company – Gielgud Theatre

I was lucky enough to see this in preview and all I can say is wow! Starring Broadway Royalty Patti Lupone, lead actor Rosalie Craig and a superb cast including the hilarious Mel Giedroyc, this is a 21st century take on a musical that has been loved on Broadway and adored by theatregoers for decades. Director Marianne Elliott has been daring and gender-swapped the lead role. Exploring relationships on a stage with stellar sets you will laugh out loud and question whether marriage is the right thing for your relationship! A classic must see.

The American Clock – Old Vic

Set in NYC as the 1929 stock market crashes, meet the Baum family as their lives are changed forever.

Despite their woes, they still keep dancing and the clock never strikes midnight. With a 20’s jazz backdrop in a world where racism is still rife, this contemporary feel play promises to tell a story of a family’s journey and emotional reactions to a tale with two sides.

Adam Kay – Richmond Theatre

Adam Kay brings his show “This is Going To Hurt” for 2 performances only on the 10th February. I love his book and I’m really looking forward to this as it looks like it will be an evening of jaw aching hilarity, something we could all benefit from right now!

I can’t wait to see my February choices. I do hope that you like them and am looking forward to enjoying your thoughts when you have seen them.
