Sport To Look Forward To Between Now & June

Wimbledon Gent, Mike, rounds up the best sport to watch between now and Wimbledon Tennis…

After a February in which we’ve been battered by Storms Ciara AND Dennis, it’s somehow hard to believe we’re only four months away from sunny Wimbledon fortnight.

But before you start dusting off the tennis whites for summer, there’s plenty of sport to look forward to in the meantime.

Here are some of the sporting highlights coming up between now and then…

14 March: Rugby, Six Nations Final Round

There is currently some doubt around if or when the remaining Six Nations fixtures will take place, with the spread of coronavirus threatening to disrupt this year’s championship. Provided everything does go ahead, there is plenty left to play for. A young France team is still on course for a Grand Slam provided they can beat a resurgent Scotland fresh from their confidence-building win in Rome. If England can overcome an inconsistent Wales side still adjusting to the departure of head coach Warren Gatland, a final day trip to Italy could still see them crowned champions, if results go their way.

4 April: Horse Racing, Grand National at Aintree

In 2019, Tiger Roll became the first horse since Red Rum (1974) to win back to back Grand Nationals with more than 10m people tuning in to see. He is currently 5/1 to make it three-in-a-row, but in what is a notoriously difficult-to-predict race, here’s a few other horses to watch out for:

Kimberlite Candy – Second in the Becher Chase in December and won last time out at Warwick, Kimberlite Candy has never fallen or pulled-up.

Ramses de Teillee – Ran in the National last year but was only seven years old and is on really good form winning over hurdles, so may stand a chance.

Yala Enki – Has stepped up under new trainer Paul Nicholls and seems to work well with jockey Bryony Frost. Third in the Welsh National, won at Taunton and third at Haydock which shows his ability over longer distances.

Tiger Woods, the 2019 Masters Champion.

9-12 April: Golf, The Masters at Augusta

Golf’s first – and most visually stunning – major of the year, with all eyes on Tiger Woods after his incredible triumph in 2019. Reclaiming the green jacket at the 84th Masters Tournament would take him to an incredible 16 majors, and one step closer to Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18. But there will be stiff competition from the likes of World Number One Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth and many others.

9 May: Football, Women’s FA Cup final (Wembley)

Manchester City won their second FA Women’s Cup in three seasons last year without even conceding a goal, completing their first domestic cup double. They are being closely pursued by Arsenal & Chelsea this year in the Premier League, and you’d have to fancy one of those three to get their names on the Cup.

23 May/30 May: Football, Men’s FA Cup final (Wembley) & Champions League final (Istanbul)

With the league already wrapped up, there is still plenty to play for in the cups. Both Manchester sides, as well as Arsenal and Chelsea, will see the FA Cup as their best shot of a trophy, while Liverpool can start thinking about a double or even a possible treble of trophies. Istanbul holds fond memories for them, and not many would bet against them on current form.

12 June to 12 July: Football – Euro 2020 (final at Wembley)

The first Euros to be spread across several European countries and with both semi finals and the final taking place at Wembley for the first time since Euro ‘96, Gareth Southgate will be hoping his young England team can make a significant impact. World Cup winners France will be among the favourites while Italy, Germany and the Netherlands all hope for a resurgence after disappointing recent campaigns.
