Following on from International Women’s Day, on Saturday 24th March the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women’s Association is holding an important event that focuses on education empowerment for women.
Our very own Madam Mayor of Merton, Marsie Skeete, has attended many of their events and has expressed her appreciation of the work done to promote community cohesion and how this could be used by other religious groups.
She commended the Ahmadiyya Muslim Women for “all the hard work and dedication given to the community” and invited them to the Mayor’s Parlour to “celebrate the people whose contribution and commitment to the community ensure Merton is a great place to live in.”
The Ahmadiyya Women learnt a great deal from the Mayor who is truly an inspiration for them. She spoke to the young girls and encouraged them to study and achieve anything they want with hard work, determination and dedication. She said she had never thought that she was going to become the Mayor of Merton, and when she stands down she would like to continue to work with the community.
She spoke passionately, encouraging the women not to be daunted by any obstacles or negative portrayals of Muslims in the media, and to continue to give back to the community as they had been doing. This includes raising money for charity, visiting care homes and donating food hampers to hospitals and food banks.
The event on Saturday 24th March will include speeches on education empowerment for women by representatives of different faiths: Christianity, Hinduism and Islam. If you would like to attend please register by emailing: fzakbar@hotmail.co.uk
