Nothing like a morning boxing class to start the weekend off right! 9am at Wimbledon Park with Hatton Academy is something you don’t want to miss.
Mark Kisz and Damien Murphy have teamed up to create a boxing workout that focuses on not just throwing some punches, but the technique in each jab, hook, or upper cut.
Before the gloves even went on we perfected our stance – feet diagonal and shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent and weight distributed evenly over both legs, elbows in, hands up to protect the money maker and we’re ready to go! This was our go to position after every movement.
Once we got the stance down, we partnered up and put the gloves and pads on (this is when my inner Rocky came out). It was now time for some basic boxing combinations *jab-cross, jab-cross-hook, jab-cross-hook-cross*
Mark and Damien made the demonstrations look so easy, but when it was my turn I realised it doesn’t just take strength and stamina to master these movements, it takes a great deal of focus and concentration to successfully throw each punch.
Save the best for last, the cardio drill – a combination of strength, speed, focus and technique. A pyramid of punches beginning from 2 all the way to 20 and back down again! This was a true test to my stamina.
I finished the workout pumped, energised, and just about ready to step into the ring.
