Carers Support Merton scored a hit with their Starlight Cabaret in December 2015, and they’re planning another hugely attractive concert at the end of January:  a programme of Palm Court Favourites.

In the early decades of the 20th century one of the splendid features of a grand hotel was its Palm Court salon, where guests were entertained with delightful light music from a small orchestra in an elegant indoor oasis of ceiling-high palm trees.

Musicians line up

L to R: Paul Guinery, Marta Tobar, Timea Gazdag, Stella Di Virgilio, Oliver John Ruthven

The CSM concert will recreate this ambience, complete with the requisite foliage!  Five musicians – pianist, violinist and cellist, and two singers, will captivate with memorable and familiar miniatures, such as Noel Coward’s “I’ll see you again” from Bitter Sweet, Herman Finck’s popular little gavotte “In the shadows”, the 1905 novelty “The grasshopper’s dance” and instrumental solos such as Kreisler’s “Schön Rosmarin” and “The swan” by Saint-Saëns.  Altogether, an evening of charm and nostalgia.

The concert is at 7.30pm on Friday 27 January at Christ Church West Wimbledon, Cottenham Park Road, SW20 0NA.

Tickets are £20.00 (£5.00 for under 18s and carers registered with CSM);  they’re available from Debbie Kilby, Carers Support Merton, The Vestry Hall, London Road, Mitcham, CR4 3UD (Phone: 020 8646 7515 / Email: debbie@csmerton.org) or from Lesley Carlton Jones (Phone: 020 8947 2932 / Email: carltonjones@hotmail.co.uk)
