Last weekend, our Out and About blogger, Laura Megatli, set off to Wimbledon Windmill to learn more about the historic building.

Situated in the heart of Wimbledon Common, Wimbledon Windmill is an idyllic starting point for a weekend family walk with the dog in tow. There’s ample parking so no need to worry about the weekend rush, although in the summer parking is sure to be in higher demand. The Windmill Cafe covers the basics needed at the start or end of any ‘hike’…cake (you should definitely try the red velvet). During the warmer months we strongly suggest grabbing a picnic table outside and enjoying an ice cream while taking in your surroundings.

The windmill was built in 1817 and is currently preserved as a museum which is open to the public. As a museum, the windmill details its own history, including the history of windmills in general. The museum features great interactive exhibits, such as push-button models and grain-grinding activities for all ages to take part in. Visitors are also able to explore the layout of the windmill, learn about when it was actually working and used as housing. The museum is open at weekends and bank holidays from 25 March to October. As it’s the windmill’s bicentennial year, the Trust that look after the windmill have kindly offered free entry throughout the year to everyone.

Head down to the windmill on Wimbledon Common to learn more about its interesting history and see if you can find a Womble or two while you’re at it!
