Autumn is a great time to dust off your gym gear and get back into a routine as it is the time of the year when we most feel reinvigorated after a summer of soaking up the sun and laughter. And it doesn’t need to feel as daunting as it may seem at first.
Here are my 5 tips to keep you healthy this autumn.
#1 – Whether you want to lose weight, tone up, even keep healthy stop overthinking it. Getting into and staying in shape should be fun. I’d caution against becoming obsessed with diet ‘fads’ such as low carb, Keto and even intermittent fasting.
Every individual is different and it’s incredibly hard to guess whether one of these diets would suit you compared to another. When broken down exercising can be quite simple maths. Burn more calories than you consume. MyFitnessPal is a great app to help you track what you’re eating. You’ll become more aware of your calorific intake which will help you improve your behavious and attitude towards food.
#2 – Your body needs to exercise, so the longer you spend motionless the less calories you’ll burn. Studies suggest that people who wake up earlier limit unecessary stress to the body and feel more proactive.
Try getting up an hour earlier and making yourself a nutrious and hearty breakfast. With the extra time on your hands you could even walk a bit more to work in the mornings. Creating good habits like this can make a massive difference.
#3 – Don’t let a bad day of eating become a bad week of eating. If you’ve had a day where you’ve binged on unhealthy foods, snacks and beverages steer away from ‘my diets starts Monday’ attitude.
If you’ve fallen off the wagon, accept it. Then pick yourself back up and start afresh the next day!
#4 – Even when eating the healthiest of foods an extra dollop of your favourite sauce or dash of seasoning could be adding an extra +1,000 calories per week if left unchecked. This could lead to unwanted weight gain and jeopardise all the good work you’ve put in so far so pay attention!
#5 – Get active! Gyms aren’t scary places. In fact there will be people in the same boat as you. Wanting to get fit, stay healthy and enjoy life more.
By going to the gym you’ll be meeting new people and can discover new exercises or routines which you’ll enjoy. Get to the gym, put the work in and reap those gains.
