The Dons Local Action Group will be hosting a fund-raising event to help tackle homelessness in South West London.
Dons Local Action Group have partnered with Tooting Community Kitchen, Faith In Action and Kingston Churches Action On Homelessness on a Big Sleep Out taking place on 27th November at Cherry Red Records Stadium, Wimbledon. The event aims to raise £20’000 to help people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness across Wandsworth, Merton and Kingston.
Volunteers, football fans and the general public will join C.E.O. of AFC Wimbledon, Joe Palmer, at the event, alongside Xavier Wiggins – Co-founder of Dons Local Action Group. Participants in the event will be asked to fundraise £250.00 each through sponsorship and spend the night outside with just a sleeping bag. All of the money raised will be split between the organisations to help them continue the vital work of fighting poverty within the community.
In Wandsworth alone it is estimated that there are over 400 homeless adults which is an increase of 24% on the previous year.
Dons Local Action Group are responsible for distributing over 500 tonnes of food in 2021 and over 2200 devices since the pandemic began to local people experiencing poverty. They are a crucial part of our local community and any support whatsoever is hugely appreciated
Xavier Wiggins, Co-founder of Dons Local Action Group believes that “The evening will be a reality check for all of us but it is for an extremely worthwhile cause. These organisations have collectively helped people to break the cycle of homelessness and they continue to provide much needed support to people who find themselves in this situation from within our community.”
Darren Short, who is taking part in the Big Sleep Out said “Homelessness is such an important cause. There are so many people struggling in our community and anything we can do to raise awareness and money for the charities can only help improve conditions for them,”
