Marcus and Darshana Ubl have been building successful businesses together since 2011. For them business is about channelling their creativity to produce things of quality that enhance the experience of living.

We got in touch with Darshana – the incredible female counterpart behind the Brand, to learn more about what it takes to be a successful women in business and the challenges that she has faced on her journey…

• Who/ What inspired you to start your own business?

The inspiration was having observed the life and the legacy of my grandfather who had set up manufacturing factories that employed thousands of people. His business not only created opportunities for others, assets for our family but also benefited the community.

Capital is key to starting a business and when I was denied start-up capital from my family as they had other plans for me, I decided that I will work hard, save and invest to build my pot of capital.

I was able to do so in 2011 which is when I started my first business in London.

• What is the biggest challenge you have faced?

I’ve found that nothing worthwhile comes easily. The universe somehow finds a way to test you, to see if you really want something and are focused on achieving your dreams. A part of that test is sending challenges and I’ve had my share in business – being exposed to wild currency fluctuations due to Brexit, running out of stock during peak season, the pandemic, etc. A large part of being in business is about having a positive and solution focused mindset and remembering that what does not break you, makes you stronger!

• What do you enjoy most about running your own business?

I love the creative part of being in business – creating something of value from nothing. Solving a problem for the customer and creating opportunities and jobs for others. Besides creativity and solving a problem, I do enjoy the flexibility that running your own business can provide once the brand is established.

• Which product/service have you enjoyed creating the most?

Everything I create has passion involved in it. I’ve enjoyed creating the print designs for our silk pillowcases and sleep masks the most. Also enjoyed the process of the creative photoshoot.

• How do you celebrate International Women’s Day?

Previously International Womens Day would be an opportunity to connect with other female founders, entrepreneurs and leaders. I’ve spoken at many business events and had the pleasure of meeting women who are making a difference such as Dame Kelly Holmes, Cherie Blair, etc. In 2020 I was invited to the House of Lords as one of the Top 100 female entrepreneurs for F:Entrepreneur by Michelle Ovens.

• What advice would you like to pass on?

I find that a lot of women compare themselves to others and get demoralised by it. Comparison is the fastest way to feel unhappy. Instead, focus on your strengths, have a plan and work hard at it. Build up people you choose to have in your life. There is no comparison between the sun and the moon. They shine when it is their time.

Learn and absorb as much as you can but see how some things sit with your intuition. When your skills, talents, passion and intuition align – magic happens. Don’t rush through life and succumb to the pressures of competition. (There is no competition between the sun and the moon, they both at their time
