Pop Ups
The Roald Dahl-inspired Children’s Chaiparty is a pop up parent and child dining club in Wimbledon. The menu promises Oompa-Loompa chocolate milkshake and Snozzcumber sandwiches for kids, and some sophisticated Indian fare for the grown ups, with a storyteller to regale you. Dress up as your favourite Dahl character. April 8, 3.30-5.30pm, South Wimbledon Community Centre annexe, Haydon’s Road. £25 for one adult and one child.
While you’re on the GrubClub.com site, check out this Indian Street Food with Twisted Gin Infusion Pairings on Thursday, April 6, at Chit Chaat Chai in Wandsworth, 7pm, £35.
Art
TV has been filled with tributes to the great British abstract painter Howard Hodgkin who died last week, reminding us of his rich use of colour and genius brushwork. See for yourself at the National Portrait Gallery, whose exhibition of Hodgkin portraits, Howard Hodgkin: Absent Friends, opened this week. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, has already paid a visit. Open daily 10am – 5.30pm, £10.
Film
Did you like Reservoir Dogs? Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley and the very up-and-coming Brie Larsen [Room] star in Free Fire (15), a stylish shoot-em-up with gallows humour from thoughtful director Ben Wheatley. Filmed in a warehouse in Brighton, where the starry cast spend three months crawling on rubble.
This week’s family film choice is Boss Baby (U), from the director of Madagascar.
Theatre
Catch the NT Live cinema screening of the National Theatre’s gender-bending production of Twelfth Night, starring the brilliant Tamsin Greig as Malvolia, on Thursday April 6, or as an encore screening on April 13.
In Brief
If you or your kids still haven’t mastered bike riding or would like some road training, Cycle Confident offers free lessons to Merton residents. There are adult courses open this Saturday, and kids’ Level 1 training on Thursday and Friday April 6 – 7.
