TV has been filled with tributes to the great British abstract painter Howard Hodgkin who died last week, reminding us of his rich use of colour and genius brushwork. See for yourself at the National Portrait Gallery, whose exhibition of Hodgkin portraits, Howard Hodgkin: Absent Friends, opened this week. Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, has already paid a visit. Open daily 10am – 5.30pm, £10.

Did you like Reservoir Dogs? Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley and the very up-and-coming Brie Larsen [Room] star in Free Fire (15), a stylish shoot-em-up with gallows humour from thoughtful director Ben Wheatley. Filmed in a warehouse in Brighton, where the starry cast spend three months crawling on rubble.
