As a Cosmetic Doctor I’m often asked “What can I do to get healthier, fresher and (in a lowered tone) younger looking skin?” Well as luck would have it, you can’t go far wrong taking a trip to our local ‘SW19 tennis tournament’. And what’s not to love? Watching the world’s top tennis players battling it out right here on our doorstep, with a bowl of strawberries in one hand, a glass of champagne or Pimm’s in the other, and if we’re lucky, some glorious sunshine to top it off.  What a winning combination for the senses and the soul, but what about our skin?

Well, once again it’s good news. Strawberries, champagne and sunshine – all in moderation… (wink) can work wonders on the skin!

The great British strawberry is a super food, packed with anti-oxidants and vitamin C (which is a powerful anti-inflammatory) that significantly improves hydration, and keeps your skin looking younger.

Vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin”, improves mood, is essential for the health of bone and muscle and protects against inflammation.

When the skin is exposed to sunshine it initiates the production vitamin D. Vitamin D, the “sunshine vitamin”, improves mood, is essential for the health of bone and muscle and protects against inflammation.

Champagne’s polyphenols have been found to reduce redness and inflammation of the skin. It also has been shown to improve circulation in various studies. Result!

But a word of caution, and perhaps the most important anti ageing tip of all…sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! Oh and a hat and large dark glasses. And on all three counts the bigger the better as on this occasion, size definitely matters! Use at least a factor 30, paying particular attention to the face, neck, décolletage and hands. Whilst we know the body and mind need moderate amounts of sunshine to thrive, these delicate areas of the body will not thank you for it in years to come.

So tuck in to your strawberries, sip away at your champagne and bask in a few rays as it’s game, set and match to these Wimbledon traditions!
