December’s social soirees are knocking on the door and as you dust off last year’s party dress it may become apparent that a new frock is most definitely in order. While a stylish dress is a fail-safe option lots of women hate wearing dresses and find it virtually impossible to find the right fit. Thankfully there are plenty of alternatives, from slinky jumpsuits, embellished tops and dressy jeans. Try a chic update on the classic little black dress or glam things up with sparkling sequins and plush velvet. This winter’s party range is quite literally bursting at the seams, so check out Hel and Mel’s edit of their best party wear picks to see you through the festive season.

1. Twinkle twinkle

While the idea of dressing like a bauble might be a little daunting to some, Christmas is all about standing out and shining bright! Sequins are bang on trend this season, so add a little (or a lot!) of sparkle to the occasion and twinkle like a star.

Lavish Alice velvet sequin one shoulder dress in emerald, £95.00

Missguided pink sequin wrap balloon sleeve mini dress, £60.00

Pretty Lavish Fifi sequin dress, £78

2. The ultimate wardrobe classic

You can’t go wrong with a little black dress! Whether you’re looking to sex it up, add some drama or find something a little more discreet, the little black dress has been our saviour for years, so why not invest in a good one and you can have a fool proof go-to for any occasion. Try boosting your classic LBD by adding a modern twist; leather, puff sleeves, tulle, velvet, sequin embellishments, sensual lace.

Black velvet puff sleeve mini dress, River Island, £60

Mesh tulle dress, Oasis, £45.50

Karin lace-detailed sequin dress, Preen by Thornton Bregazzi, Moda Operandi, £836

3. Pop of colour

Whilst the LBD is the go-to party outfit for most of us, give yours a night off and steal the spotlight with an equally chic and festive red dress, or a bold and beautiful bright blue. It’s not just the presents that get wrapped in festive colours, so dare to ditch the black and sprinkle some Christmas cheer.

Ted Baker Metallic one shoulder draped midi dress £199

Very Michelle Keegan Puff Sleeve Wrap Bodycon Dress – Cobalt £35.00

Silk Fred Cowl neck satin green slip dress, £55.00

4. Dress dilema?

Hate wearing sparkly party dresses and looking like a tree decoration?! There are lots stylish alternatives from slinky tops and dressy slacks to a sophisticated suit in a bold colour or print. Dial it up with some glittery heels and a fancy clutch and just add some costume jewellery to inject a little bling!

Gold ruche sation wide-leg trousers, £16, Gold ruche satin cami top £8.80, Nasty Gal

Red tailored suit jacket, £94, Red tailored suit trousers, £87, Karen Millen

Sequin trouser, £120, sequin cami, £88, Jigsaw

5. Keep cosy and snug

Your party outfit is on point and you’re ready to hit the town….but wait! What coat do you wear? When it’s far too cold for your trusty leather jacket, this seasons must have faux fur teddy bear coat is the answer. Not only does is keep you cosy and snug, nothing adds more glamour to an outfit like a faux fur coat.

The White Company – Long Faux-Fur Coat with Revere Collar £239.00

ASOS faux fur maxi coat £80.00

H&M faux fur grey coat £99.99

 6. Jeans and a nice top!

We all have those events when all you actually need to feel great and look good is a simple ‘jeans and a nice top’. Although finding that perfect combo is often a lot harder than you think right?! Look no further, we’ve got this covered! The perfect fit jeans that flatter your butt, are comfortable but still slim and lengthen your legs are the holy grail! We think Graysey have it covered with their ethical, slow fashion brand that supports ‘Women for Women International’.
