Love Wimbledon Brings The Community Together To Celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
Love Wimbledon has commissioned a summer-long art installation drawing on the fantastic creativity from young minds in Wimbledon.
To commemorate The Queen’s 70 years of service, Love Wimbledon invites visitors into Wimbledon Town Centre to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee, the installation centres around five quintessentially British concepts to energise and connect the community.
Featuring designs based on a corgi, a portrait of The Queen, a crown, a teacup, and an environmentally inspired design that was driven by the community, five large silhouettes on repurposed plinths have been unveiled across the town. Each plinth has been placed in a different location to encourage engagement with various parts of the town centre – Wimbledon Hill Road, Wimbledon Station, New Wimbledon Theatre, Polka Theatre and The Piazza.
Love Wimbledon looked to local schoolchildren to create designs for the fifth plinth, representing what trees mean to them and to the planet. Hosting an art competition for under 16’s in Merton, many creative young minds submitted thought-provoking images. The winning two images have been reinterpreted by an artist on the planet-shaped plinth on The Piazza for everyone to see and admire.
The entire installation will be on display in Wimbledon Town Centre until Monday 5th September 2022, and will be supported by a large Union Jack bunting display, hanging from the canopy on The Piazza, in tribute to Britain’s longest-reigning Monarch.
Love Wimbledon worked with creative agency Visual Impact to bring the installation to life, sponsored by local businesses: A-Plan Insurance, Elys, Morr & Co, The Piazza and WSM .
