Jeroboams in Wimbledon Village is the go-to destination for your Christmas reds and Winter whites. With so much already on your to-do list at this time of year, head to your local wine gurus and allow them to make sure that you have the perfect accompaniments for your festive feast.

Group shot of bottles of fine wine.

Jeroboams originated as a cheese and wine club, run by founder Peter Rich. What began as a passion project quickly blossomed into a business, with the opening of the first Jeroboams store in 1985. Supplying wines to the finest restaurants in London, in recent years they have broadened their fine food offerings, as well hosting events and local tastings. Throughout the years Jeroboams’ core values have always remained: a steadfast belief in high quality products, and exceptional customer service. A welcoming local wine merchant, proud of their close relationships with communities and residents alike.

Located in London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, one of the most recent additions to the Jeroboams family is their Wimbledon Village store. Lady Wimbledon popped in to chat to store manager Johannes Hargreaves about his journey with Jeroboams and what he recommends you add to your list for Santa this year…

What wine would you like in your stocking this year?

California’s Cabernet Sauvignon superstar The Mascot 2019! It was one of the highlights of the year tasting it earlier, and I think it will only get better with a bit of time.

How did you start in the wine industry?

Coming up to Christmas 2008, I had been made redundant from an exhibition administrator role during the credit crunch, and when picking up some wine, the manager asked if I was looking for a job so I jumped at the chance!

When did you join Jeroboams and why?

I joined in July 2023. I was looking to work with a more exciting range and liked the idea of combining food and wine; both things I love and working in the newest of the Jeroboams shops in the village was an exciting opportunity.

What’s the best thing that has happened to you in Jeroboams Wimbledon?

I had a very fun tasting this summer during the UEFA Euro Championships, where we hosted a charity event for AFC Wimbledon. We showcased wines from the winners of the championship since 2000, making a brave stab at combining the world of wine and football. It was very entertaining for everyone, and one of the attendees had the sweetest guide dog joining us the whole way through.

What would you like people to remember when visiting the shop?

That they had a good experience here finding something delicious that they will come back for. I think all the parts of the experience are important, so as well as our selection of wines, spirits, cheese etc, we hope they remember the aesthetic details in the merchandising display, the lighting, good music and knowledgeable and kind staff!

What are your favourite gifts for friends and family?

Champagne always goes down well as an all-rounder (our Layton’s Champagne is popular and always a great starting point), but often good with something else like a Vacherin Mont d’Or cheese for a cheese lover, Iberico ham for a carnivore or a decent cigar for an occasional smoker.
