On a beautiful day filled with sunshine, Wimbledon Village was a hype of activity and I was happily people watching from the window seat of The White Onion.

The beautiful French restaurant is situated in the centre of the Village and is a sophisticated and calm space to enjoy an outstanding meal. Their menu is filled with so many stunning items including some rarer dishes that having never tried before we had to go for. It was nice to discover new flavour combinations and ingredients.

For starters we enjoyed the butternut squash velouté with chestnut tortellini, hickory crème fraîche. A creamy soup with the soft taste of butternut squash complimented the rich and nutty chestnut tortellini, it felt like a perfect winter soup. So warm and filling.

The other starter we chose was the crispy duck egg with duck leg rillettes, celeriac, teriyaki and truffle sauce. First of all it was so beautifully presented and the dismantling the tower of food seemed almost sacrilegious. The dots of sauce were brilliant to dip into for each bite and the duck itself was succulent and soft under it’s crispy layer.

For the main meal I chose the corn fed chicken from Normandy served with Parmesan gnocchi, grilled hispi cabbage, wild mushrooms, thyme jus. The chicken was cooked to perfection and so succulent, the jus was a little sweeter than I thought it would be but it worked with the parmesan gnocchi and earth flavour of the mushroom to produce an exquisite taste.

Our second main dish was the pan fried gurnard lemon crushed potatoes, samphire, radishes, miso and Parmesan froth. This dish was beautiful, full of hints of colour from the radishes and green beans against the warm orange of the gurnard. It was a picture of what a stunning dish should be and we were lucky enough to taste it. We hadn’t tried gurnard before and really enjoyed the flavour especially with the parmesan froth and the little hit of pepper from the radish.

The White Onion is a perfect place to enjoy a casual lunch while shopping in the Village, all the way to a celebration meal with friends and family. It really does cater for all tastes and makes sure those tastes compliment each other and gives you a wonderful dining experience.
