The build-up to Christmas brightens up the winter months at the end of the year; the festive spirit, the Christmas lights and lots of parties! However this period can pile on the stress in a multitude of ways; financially, tricky family dynamics and the effect of over-consumption on our health and general wellbeing.
Here are 5 Top Tips to lower the stress levels and keep you feeling fabulous at Christmas.
1. Let go of perfectionism – perfectionism is a trait many of us have and it can go into overdrive at Christmas. Cooking the perfect turkey, hosting the perfect Christmas party, finding the perfect presents. Simply put there is no such thing as perfect and the connections we make by spending time together over the holiday period are far more long-lasting and fulfilling than anything else – make that your focus.
2. Don’t put pressure on yourself to overspend – it is so easy to fall into the trap of spending way over budget on presents, decoration, food and drink in an effort to make merry at Christmas time. The most effective way to combat the pain of feeling the pinch come January is to make a simple budget of how much you will spend on what, making sure it is well within your current budget.
3. Aim to follow the 80/20 rule when it comes to consumption – it so tempting to throw all our good intentions about eating and exercising out of the window in this cold season which is full of all the treats you can think of! Of course enjoy the mince pies and mulled wine, however, overindulgence always leads to feeling rubbish. Using the 80/20 rule is very useful; when you are not at Christmas parties or events, eat healthy, whole foods and keep walking, going to the gym and practising yoga – 80% of the time. The 20% when you are letting your hair down enjoy it without guilt!
4. Be generous, with yourself – while we are rushing around getting everything done in preparation for Christmas don’t forget about your own self-care, what you need and what makes you feel nourished. Make time for yourself, treat yourself to a special Christmas gift and know that you don’t have to say yes to everything. Give yourself evenings to chill and have a lovely long bath, take walks in the park and snuggle up on the sofa with your favourite box set.

5. Practice present moment awareness – in the usual chaos of the festive season remember to breathe and tune into this moment. Your enjoyment of time with family and friends will increase significantly the more present you are able to be. You will also feel more calm and peaceful.
Wishing you a very Happy Christmas!
