Cold weather doesn’t have to defeat your sense of style. All you need is the right wardrobe to help maximise comfort and elegance. Follow these tips to help you ace your winter look.

Layering essentials for cold weather

Dressing for winter temperatures is all about layering. Start with a base layer, such as a lightweight, long-sleeve T-shirt in a soft, natural fabric like cotton. Then, add a mid-layer such as a chunky knit sweater, fleece or cardigan to trap warmth. Finish with a high-quality coat or jacket for insulation and weather protection.

Accessories like scarves, gloves and beanies can provide further comfort. Choose cashmere or wool-blend options for added warmth without compromising on style. In really cold weather, don’t forget thermal tights or leggings under jeans or skirts for an extra layer.

Winter dresses and staying chic

Dresses can remain a winter staple if styled correctly. Knitted women’s dresses or those made from thicker fabrics like velvet or corduroy can be the ideal choice. Midi and maxi lengths are particularly practical because they keep more of your legs covered.

Paired with thermal tights and over-the-knee boots, you’ll have a stunning outfit offering both style and warmth. Throw on a belted coat to highlight your waistline and add structure to your outfit.

For evening events, metallic and jewel-tone dresses with long sleeves are a great way to make a statement without exposing yourself to the cold too much.

Choosing the right fabrics

Certain fabrics retain heat better than others. Wool, cashmere and fleece are ideal for comforting jumpers and cardigans, while tweed and velvet are strong options for winter trousers and dresses.

For outerwear, look for options with down or synthetic insulation. Avoid lightweight summer fabrics like linen and chiffon unless they’re part of a layered ensemble.

Stylish outerwear for every occasion

Coats are likely to be the centrepiece of your winter outfits. Invest in a tailored wool coat for those occasions where you want to look smarter and more elegant. For a more luxurious look, try a faux-fur-trimmed coat or a cape coat to add another dimension.

Quilted jackets and puffer coats offer both warmth and trendiness for everyday errands, while basics like a waterproof parka are perfect for casual, wet days walking the dog or something similar.

Footwear choices

Winter footwear needs to be both functional and fashionable. Knee-high boots in leather provide excellent insulation and pair beautifully with skirts and dresses.

Ankle boots with thick soles are versatile and work well with jeans and trousers. On snowy or icy days, prioritise boots with grippy soles for safety without sacrificing style.
